Trying To Fight An Addiction?

Addictions of any kind are unhealthy. Let’s see… There are sexual addictions, drug addictions, alcohol addictions, attention-seeking addictions, biting addictions, etc. Some people have addictions that you would never believe existed. Whatever addiction you are currently struggling with, this is my best advice to you: just STOP doing it. I know what you’re thinking, it is NOT that easy! I am aware of that. Trust me I KNOW! But you are much more powerful than you realize. Ever heard of “mind over matter”? Needing that thing that you are addicted to is all in your mind. You don’t need it; you only THINK you do. You have to begin and continue telling yourself, “I do NOT need this.” And then DON’T do it. And keep NOT doing it. Once you get past the initial ‘pain’ of abstaining from your addiction, it gets easier. Sometimes the action has to precede the thought. In other words, there are some things that we have to first stop doing before the desire to do them goes away. When I made the decision to abstain from sex until marriage, I had to first stop doing it. It was very hard and it took a few tries (I backslid a few times). But eventually  I stopped, got through the initial pain of abstaining, and now I can honestly say that I am okay with not having sex. And I suffered from addiction to sex. I never ever thought that I would be able to overcome but by the grace of God, I did! It took lots of prayer, reading God’s Word, and staying out of tempting situations.
While you’re still in the beginning phase where you could easily give in, you must stay away from situations (and people) that tempt you to indulge in your addiction. For example, if you struggle with an alcohol addiction you need to stay away from settings where alcohol will be served. Eventually you will be strong enough to be around it and not be bothered. Until then, do what you have to do. And that may mean missing a few social gatherings until you’re strong enough. That’s exactly what I had to do. For awhile, I stayed away from bars and any other event that served alcohol. Three years later, I can be around it and not feel an ounce of desire to indulge.
I’m only able to speak on overcoming addiction because I have overcome a few, and currently still in the process of overcoming one. Like I said, any addictions is unhealthy no matter how ‘small’. If you struggle with an addiction that may be a threat to your health or to others, or an addiction that affects your daily functioning, I encourage you to reach out to your local government for resources that may be able to help. Remember, the first step in overcoming any addiction is to first acknowledge that you have an addiction and need help. You are not the only one so never feel ashamed and too embarrassed to seek help. We all have struggled or are still struggling with some kind of addiction so you are not alone, dear brother or sister.

*I just want to mention that some addictions are the result of spiritual strongholds. And in that case, you need deliverance which is a process that includes reading the Word of God, prayer, fasting, and falling to the feet of Jesus. True deliverance takes place in your spirit, mind, and body. You are more than welcome to send a prayer request if you would like help battling your addiction spiritually. And the Lord said to Moses, “How long will these people treat me with contempt……”

Numbers 14:11New Living Translation (NLT)

11 And the Lord said to Moses, “How long will these people treat me with contempt? Will they never believe me, even after all the miraculous signs I have done among them?

The above scripture is the first verse I read in the Bible that made me really FEEL for God. Up until then I had never felt any emotion for Him. I knew that I am supposed to love God but I thought maybe praying to Him, reading His Word, and obeying His Word was loving Him. While loving Him does encompass all of those things, I realized that that’s not the only way to love God; I could actually FEEL love for Him. I got so emotional and cried when I read this verse… once I realized I was feeling an actual emotion for God, I went from crying to smiling to amazement because I never thought I could feel for Him.  I had read the preceding chapters– Genesis, Exodus, and Leviticus; so by this time I felt like I had gotten to know the Lord. In getting to know Him, I realized that when He said, “Let Us make man in Our own image” (Genesis 1:26), He was not only talking about physical image like I had always thought He meant (male, female, body, etc.); He was also talking about in His image as we are beings with feelings just like Him. The same way we feel happy, sad, hurt, angry, and any other emotion is the same way God feels. Yes, He FEELS. He even says in His Word that He is a jealous God (Exodus 34:14). And the Word also says that at one point, He was so angry with man that He REGRETTED creating us! (Genesis 6:6)

During the time of this verse, God had been using Moses to deliver His people, the Israelites, out of slavery in Egypt. He used Moses in a special way… He used Moses to perform miracles in front of the people so that they would believe in Him, trust Him, and give Him glory. These people had witnessed God’s miracles with their own eyes time after time and it still was never enough. It seemed nothing could make them happy. God delivered them from the hands of the Egyptians… He performed miracles….. he provided them with food and drink on their long journey into the Land that He promised they would inherit. But still they complained and they also sinned against God. So in this verse, the Lord is asking Moses how long are they going to keep trying me?? Why won’t they just listen?? When I read this, I felt sadness from the Lord. Knowing Him (I can say that now because I do), I am sure that He was angry but I felt more hurt coming from Him than anything. I thought about how He had done so much for His people yet they could not turn from their sinful ways; nor would they stop complaining.

Reminds me of us today…. God has worked in our lives in different ways to prove Himself to us (not that He has anything to prove); but I believe He proves Himself for us to continue to trust in Him and also so that we know it is HIM. He has proven Himself to be faithful…. forgiving…. loving…. miraculous…. redeeming… freeing (feel free to add to this)

And even then, we still wonder….  we still doubt… we still question…

We still turn away from Him when things are going wrong

But, I wonder what would happen if we decide….. to just trust that He knows what He’s doing?

The world makes us believe that it is okay to sleep around… Jumping from bed to bed, sharing our bodies ~ But the Word of God says do you not know that your body is a temple in which the Holy Spirit dwells? With every other sin it is outside of the  body but when we fornicate we sin against our own body  (1 Corinthians 6:18-20)

The world has us seeking popularity… trying to be liked, loved, and admired by all  but the WORD of God says to be a friend of the world is to be an enemy of God (James 4:4)

The world makes us think love is supposed to hurt.  “He hurt me because he loves me”∼  the WORD of God says that love is kind. The world will tell you that you can never change… The world reminds you of your past to discourage you. To make you believe that you still are what you were & can never be anything more  the WORD of God says that in Christ you are made NEW…..  you are a new creation & old things have passed. (2 Corinthians 5:17)
